A specialist in landscape painting, Josep Berga y Boada was the main disciple of his father, Josep Berga i Boix, under whose tutelage he trained as a painter. One of the main introducers of modernism in Olot, he was a member of the Institute of Arts, Sciences and Industries of said population. He also collaborated with writings and illustrations in "Catalunya artistica", "La Ilustració Catalana", "L'Esquella de la Torratxa" and "L'Olotí", of which he was director.
