Blanco Coris began his career painting history paintings in the 19th-century style, but later evolved towards a less sweetened costumbrismo and began to cultivate still life. He was also interested in Japanese and East Asian art and wrote a "Manual of Decorative Art" in which he dedicated chapters to the arts of China and Japan.
