Josef Eberz - Artist Info

About Josef Eberz

  • Biography

Nowadays, one would describe Josef Eberz as an "all-rounder". He was a painter, graphic artist, illustrator, designer of mosaics and glass windows.

In Munich, Eberz studied with Franz von Stuck and Peter Halm before coming to Stuttgart via Düsseldorf and Karlsruhe, where he became a master student of Adolf Hölzel. As a result, Eberz took part in the Sonderbund exhibition in Cologne in 1912, the largest exhibition of modern art to date. His work is exhibited alongside works by van Gogh, Munch and Picasso.

In the period that followed, Eberz turned increasingly to sacred art, painting churches and designing church windows.

A temporary high point of his career is a scholarship at the Villa Massimo in Rome in 1929.
