From 1959-1964 he attended courses and seminars at the School of Applied Arts in St. Gallen and at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His painterly early work in the 1960's testifies to objectivity. Ebnother created works in the tradition of Abstract Expressionism. In this sense, Ebnöther understands his formally reduced paintings both as "mental images" and as "open works of art".
