    Josef Kriehuber attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1813-18 and 1823-24 under Hubert Maurer. He also devoted himself as one of the first artists to the art of lithography, working for various publishers. Around 1825 he started with his first portrait drawings.

    At the peak of his creative work in the 1840s and 50s Kriehuber’s portraits became increasingly representative, among others influenced by the English style of portrait painting. His portraits filled the need for individuality and vibrancy while at the same time were characterized by a certain idealization and elegance.
