    Joseph Bouvier (1827-1910) was the son of Paris born French painter, Jules Bouvier (1800-1867), who exhibited and sold his landscapes on Suffolk Street, London, after his move there in 1818 with his large family in the early years of the nineteenth century. Joseph’s brother, Augustus (1825-1881) had also emigrated to London where he established himself as a successful figure painter and portraitist of the rising mercantile middle class in England.

    Augustus also illustrated printed books for a number of printers in London. Other siblings, Gustavus Arthur Bouvier (1837-1921) and Urbain James Bouvier, exhibited a significant numbers of paintings at the Royal Academy, while a younger sister, Agnes Rose Bouvier (1842-1892), was an accomp...
