    Joseph Douglas Purcell is a painter and muralist. He was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia and has lived in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia since 1953.

    His primary medium is watercolor; however, he has worked in oil, mixed mediums and fresco. The Atlantic coastal region is the source of most of his subjects such as: sailboats, harbors, fishing, seascapes, landscapes, farmhouses, country lanes, street scenes, rivers, and genre*, etc. He's also completed a large body of work documenting the Nova Scotia gold mining industry. His styles are Post-Impressionism*, Expressionism* and Fauvism*.
