    Joseph Nigg (Austrian 1782 ñ 1863) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with Johann Baptist Drechsler. He was one most important painters of flowers and fruit on porcelain in the first half of the 19th century. His delicate brush strokes, color, and finesse were unsurpassed.

    From 1800 to 1843, Nigg was lead flower painter at the Vienna porcelain factory. In 1835 he began holding classes in painting at the factory. During the Biedermeier Era, flower painting became immensely popular including painting on porcelain. At the The Great Exhibition of 1851 in London, Nigg presented a thirty inch tall painting on porcelain on behalf of the Viennese factory.
