Joseph Sloan was born in Warrenpoint, County Down. Joseph Sloan is a self-taught sculptor. His transition from working in theatre to sculpting allowed the artist to make personal impressions of humankind, exploring the figurative image bordering on abstraction in various themes including music and dance.

He worked initially in the theater, before taking up art, particularly sculpture and book illustration. He has had one and two man shows with the Kilcock Gallery and James Gallery, Dublin, Grant Fine Art, Newcastle and the Barbara Stanley Gallery, London. He exhibits regularly at the RHA and various arts festivals such as the Kilkenny Festival, where he was named best sculptor in 1990.
