    Josef van Bredael was a Belgian painter who came from a long line of painters. He copied small paintings by Jan Brueghel de Velours, Philip Wouverman, and other artists on behalf of the Antwerp merchant J. De Witte for a period of four years starting in 1706.

    In 1735, he moved to Paris and worked under the protection of the Duke of Orleans. He was known for his small brass instruments and faithfully reproducing the spirit of Brueghel's masterpieces.
