Judy Pfaff was born in 1946 in London, England. She attended Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, Illinois; and in 1971 got her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Washington University in St.Louis, Missouri. In 1973, she earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut.

Pfaff began her career as a painter, studying with Al Held. She has also been a sculptor and has done installation work for twenty-five years. She is married to photographer Rob van Erve. She has been Art Professor and co-chairman of the Art Department at Bard College, Annadale-on-Hudson, New York.
