About Jules Vallee Guerin

  • Biography

    Jules Guerin was an American muralist, architectural delineator, theater set designer and illustrator. Of his architectural career, it is written that he "participated in most of the significant American architectural and urban design projects undertaken between 1900 and 1930." (Pasquine, 243)

    He was born in St Louis, Missouri on November 18, 1866 and moved to Chicago with his family in 1880. While still in his teens, he worked as an assistant to a scene painter, and it is likely he was with Ernest Albert, who had a set design and scene painting business. In 1887, he made an extended tour of England, Ireland and France, but apparently did not take any formal art training at this time.
