Semi-figurative, minimalist painter Juliao Sarmento, who has also explored video, film and photography, was born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1948. According to differing sources, he lives and works either in Sintra or Estoril, both in his native country. He creates large paintings with sparsely placed, simplistic, drawing-like images often incorporating linear depictions of figures reminiscent of the style of David Salle.

Two catalogues of his work include the two-volume publication, The Frozen Leopard and Juliao Sarmento: Pictures and Designs, 1986-1988. His artist's book, Racial Makeup, was published in 1997 by the Center for Contemporary Art, Kitakyushu, Japan.
