    Around 1940, Alpuy joined the atelier of Joaquin Torres-Garcia in Montevideo, where he began teaching in 1943-44. He participated in fulfilling the firm's mural commissions, and in 1949, he fullfilled several commissions on his own.

    Traveling in Europe and the Middle East in 1951-1953, he filled several sketchbooks with his impressions. Alpuy returned to Montevideo to teach and fulfill several mural commissions but left again in 1957. He traveled to Chile, then lived in Bogota, Columbia, and then Caracas. In 1961 he emigrated to the U.S. and established his residence in New York City.
