    Escape from East Prussia led Karl-Heinz Berndt as a child with his mother and siblings to Berlin. In addition to training on the free painting by Emanuel Meier-Sueper and Hertha Reckzey he studied there Classical Philology, Russian Philology and psychology and worked as a lecturer and editorial staff of a scientific publisher. In Hamburg, he met his future wife Karin and settled with her in 1963 as a painter, writer and composer on the island of Sylt. Together with her, he had a gallery there for over three decades.
