Born and raised on the Crow reservation in Lodgegrass, Montana, Kevin Red Star does Indian paintings that reflect the influence of his father and mother and a home filled with love of fine art. His father was a musician, horseman, and collector of Remington and Russell prints, and his mother did meticulous beadwork and artistic sewing.

He studied at the Institute of American Indian Arts* in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with James McGrath, where he was allowed to explore his history and culture and experimented with the "New Indian Art."
