Koen Vanmechelen was born in Sint-Truiden, Belgium, in 1965. Since a child, he has shown great interest in art, especially in sculpture, as well as in science, such that one of the first presents for the young artist was a chicken incubator.

He began very early to work on his project: to create a dialogue between art and science and through this dialogue to answer some of the fundamental questions of existence.
