    Konoshima Okoku was born in 1877 in Kyoto, Japan, and died in 1945. He was a versatile Japanese painter and prize-winning artist whose work is enjoying renewed attention today.

    Okoku studied under Imao Keinen (1845–1924), one of the leading figures of modern Japanese painting, and developed a style that combined traditional nihonga techniques with a sensitivity to natural subjects. His oeuvre is marked by depictions of animals, birds, and landscapes, rendered with refined brushwork and a balance of realism and lyricism.
