    Konstantin Fedorovich Bogaevsky was born in Feodosia, Crimea and spent his childhood wandering over its hills and funerary monuments. He studied under Ivan Aivazovsky at Feodosia and later at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg under Arkhip Kuindzhi. He traveled to Italy and France but always returned to his native country where he lived and worked.

    Bogayevsky is known for his Symbolist paintings and Crimean landscapes. He was influenced by European painters such as Arnold Böcklin, Giovanni Segantini, and Gustav Klimt.

    "Old Genoese Fortress in Feodosia" is an example of his mature work in which he returns to his favorite subject.
