    Nam Kwan was born in Kyungbuk, South Korea in 1911. In 1937 he enrolled at the School of Fine Arts at Taiheiyo, Tokyo, and after graduating, returned to Korea. In Seoul he served as professor at Hongik University (a private school renowned for its Fine Arts Department) from 1947-1949. In 1954 he moved to Paris, and after a fifteen year stay in the city, again returned to Seoul. From 1969-1977, he was a member of the executive committee of the National Exhibition of the Fine Arts.
