    Kyohei Fujita (1921-2004) was a pioneer in glass manufacturing and was instrumental in introducing the Studio Glass movement in Japan. He was the first in Europe to introduce his remarkable boxes related to the Japanese lacquerware tradition.

    In 1989, Fujita was named the sole glass artist of the Japan Art Academy, an honorary society for artists who have contributed to the arts. In 1996, the Kyohei Fujita Glass Museum, a private museum in Matsushima entirely dedicated to his work, was opened. Then, in 1997, Fujita received an award from the Japanese government for "Distinguished Achievement in the Cultural Arts" and became a living national treasure in Japan.
