    Born in Budapest in 1936, László Lakner studied painting under Aurél Bernáth at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest in the 1950s. In his early work he created paintings from photographs; since 1970, he devoted himself to conceptual works and book projects.

    After a DAAD scholarship in Berlin in 1974, he decided to settle there permanently. In the late 1970s he worked as a teacher at the Comprehensive School in Essen, and later at the Free University in Berlin. From 1982 to 2001 he was a professor for experimental design at the University of Duisburg-Essen. Since 2000, a self-portrait of him has been on display at the Uffizi in Florence.
