After a DAAD scholarship in Berlin in 1974, he decided to settle there permanently. After a DAAD scholarship in Berlin in 1974, he decided to settle there permanently. In the late 1970s he worked as a teacher at the Comprehensive School in Essen, and later at the Free University in Berlin. From 1982 to 2001 he was a professor for experimental design at the University of Duisburg-Essen. Since 2000, a self-portrait of him has been on display at the Uffizi in Florence.
