Lazare Volovick was born in the present day Ukraine in Kremenchuk as the youngest son of a Jewish family with seven children. He received early drawing lessons and studied at the academies of Kharkov and Kiev from 1917. He emigrated to France with his friend Kostya Terechkovich, where he settled in Paris in 1921.

In Paris he socialized with contemporary artists and met his future wife, the dancer Lya Grebina, who he accompanied later on the tour around the world. In 1936 they lived for a few months in New York and London.
