He received early drawing lessons and studied at the academies of Kharkov and Kiev from 1917. He emigrated to France with his friend Kostya Terechkovich, where he settled in Paris in 1921. In Paris he socialized with contemporary artists and met his future wife, the dancer Lya Grebina, who he accompanied later on the tour around the world. In 1936 they lived for a few... In 1936 they lived for a few months in New York and London. In 1944 he moved to Montparnasse. He worked in the studio of his friend Vladimir Naiditch at the Boulevard St. Jacques.
