    Lee Godie, a lovable homeless eccentric, scratched a living as an artist on the streets of Chicago. Now her work, which used to sell for dollars, is coming to London's Hayward Gallery.

    It is easy to imagine that Lee Godie's self-portraits were a form of escapism. In one she appears in a fur coat waving a handful of cash. In another she is snapped as if on the way to the opera, with swept-up hair and a strapless dress. A third photograph shows Godie transformed again, this time younger, softer and gazing dreamily into the distance.
