About Leon Amyx

  • Biography

    A watercolorist, Leon Amyx was born in Visalia, CA on December 20, 1908. Amyx originally meant to pursue a career as a musician. He worked his way through college as a drummer in the pit orchestra of a silent movie house. After graduating from San Jose State College in 1931, he settled on an art career.

    He then studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts, UC Berkeley, and received an M.A. degree from Claremont Graduate School in 1941. He taught at Hartnell College in Salinas (1936-72), Sacramento State College, and San Jose State College.

    He was a resident of Georgetown, CA until his demise on Aug. 13, 1995.
