    Leopold Carl Müller (Dresden, 1834-Vienna, 1892)

    He was a genre and landscape artist who became famous for founding the Austrian school of Orientalist painting. He studied at the Vienna Academy under Karl von Blaas and Christian Ruben. From 1862-1867, Müller worked as a historical illustrator for the Vienna office of Le Figaro. During this time, Müller became inspired after a visit to Paris by the Orientalist genre painting of Eugene Fromentin. Later, Müller traveled extensively to Hungary, Italy and Egypt and maintained studios in Venice (1870-72), Sicily (1872-3) and Cairo (1873-1880's).
