    Louis-Ami Arlaud-Jurine was born in Geneva, the grand-nephew of the miniaturist Jacques Antoine Arlaud. In his home town of Geneva he was taught painting by Liotard and then studied in Paris under the tutorage of Vien at the Académie Royale.

    In 1792 he fled with his wife Suzanne to London, being opposed to the principles, and presumably the violence, of the French Revolution. He stayed until 1802 and exhibited at the Royal Academy, where his patrons included members of the Royal family and the aristocratic elite.

    Jurine was extremely successful, painting over 1,500 miniatures in one year alone. His smooth style, possibly emulated from his first master Liotard, was detailed yet ...
