    Reader and organizer of Philippe d'Orléans' parties, Louis Carrogis de Carmontelle was a writer, painter, and architect. He specialized in writing "proverbs" or light comedies, which he illustrated with "transparencies", a genre he helped to create. He became famous for the many small portraits he made of his contemporaries, becoming the illustrator of the last years of the Ancien Régime.
