As child he started to draw under the guidance of his mother, who was a school mistress, and the learned to cut designs from his father, who was a farmer. He completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter in the company of his uncle Alois. At 32 years of age, he became a postman in Rougement, and continued cutting designs. He completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter in the company of his uncle Alois. At 32 years of age, he became a postman in Rougement, and continued cutting designs. At 40 years old, he began to exhibit his works in Geneva, and enjoy the success they immediately brought him. His scherenschnitt tells of the life and the seasons in Pays-d’Enhaut, the area where he lived in the town of Rougemont. At 40 years old, he began to exhibit his works in Geneva, and enjoy the success they immediately brought him.
