About Louis Hilaire Carrand

  • Biography

Louis Carrand was a French painter born in Lyon. He was a student of Nicolas Fonville and was part of a group of painters from Lyon who were close to the Barbizon School. Carrand is considered a precursor to the Impressionists and was interested in Chevreul's theories. He mainly painted the Lyon countryside, the landscapes of Bresse and the Monts du Lyonnais, and was attracted to hazy atmospheres, gray and silver tones associated with spring or autumn, and the effects of light at dawn and dusk.
