    Louis Moilliet was born in 1880. Louis Moilliet met Paul Klee during his school years in Bern. Afterwards, he began training as a decorative painter and attended the trade school starting in 1900.

    During a stay in Worpswede, he met Fritz Mackensen, and Paula Modersohn-Becker. He then completed further studies in Düsseldorf and Weimar. In 1903, he returned to Switzerland, where he worked together with Klee.

    In 1904, he became a master student of Hermann Haller at the Academy in Stuttgart. In 1908, after his first trip to Tunisia, he met August Macke, with whom he would remain friends until his death. This was followed by a second trip to Tunisia in 1909/10.
