Ludovic Janssen was born of a father and mother from Maastricht Vervierrs. His father Louis Janssen was a painter-decorator, and his wife was Hortense Schmidt. Louis Janssen had a wallpaper shop.
Painter of landscapes, etcher, Illustrator and cartoonist, he was a student at the Academy of Liège (a. de Witte, e. Carpentier) and Saint-Luc. He attended the free workshop of etching f. Maréchal. Starts in Liège in 1918, Ludovic took an evening course at the "Academie des Beaux-Arts in Liège, where he was expelled after a quarrel. Thereafter he enjoyed a two year course at the Ecole St-Luc "in Liège. Then he exhibited at Paris with growing success.
His works included interpretation of the skies and water bodies. Using a very personal palette, bleak, with dominance of blue but also in some cases very luminous. The melancholy that impregnates his work recalls a difficult youth.
One of his mentors was Evariste Carpentier. At the beginning Janssen was mainly engaged in decoration works and illustration in several novels. One may assume that as an artist he started around 1910. That year, he created several paintings in the Salon des Artistes de l'Oeuvre. There were still several exhibitions, mainly in Liège and Brussels and in 1933 at the Salon of Ghent Quadrennial.
Ludovic Janssen & Filiaert Louise married in 1917 and they lived in the Rue des Eglantier 25 in Liege. Ludovic Janssen made such drawings that included (mills, figures, boats, animals, landscapes and nudes). As a painter ,many looked upon him as "le peintre de la Campine" - the painter of camping.
He stayed regularly in the Limburg countryside and painted in Genk, the Ardennes, in Bruges, on the banks of the Scheldt, Helchteren, Bokrijk etc. Typically for him scenes were with fishermen (Blankenberge, Oostende), ports with boats (Zeebrugge, Antwerp, Oostende), streets, bridges and views in Bruges etc. In addition to previously mentioned issues, he painted some portraits. He also stayed regularly in France (Provence, Camargue, Brittany).
His work, can be found in museums in Liège and Charleroi. Numerous exhibitions and retrospectives in Belgium and abroad.
