  • Biography

Ludwig Hartmann, born in 1835 in Munich, was a prominent Munich horse painter and etcher. After the early death of his parents, he began his career as a lithographer and later studied briefly at the Academy in Munich with Joseph Schlotthauer. Hartmann was largely self-taught and received private instruction from Johann Wagner-Deines. He developed a close friendship with Eduard Schleich the Elder, which led him to become involved in the Munich art scene. In 1870, he established a joint studio with Otto Gebler in Pähl and later shared a studio with Anton Seitz in Munich. In 1891, he was appointed as a professor.
