While his early work is realistic and expressionistic, he began to produce surrealistic compositions in the trompe-l'oeil technique from 1960 onwards.
In addition to the influence of international surrealism, elements of the Viennese School of Fantastic Realism can be found in his works. In 1975 Schwarzer received the title of professor from the Ministry of Science and Art.
