He also met the poet Portici Rocco Scotellaro who would have a lasting impact on his work. Through Scotellaro he also came into contact with Carlo Levi and Renato Guttoso in Rome. In 1956 he moved to Milan where he attended the Accademia di Brera under the guidance of Domenico Cantatore. In the 1960s he returned to Matera where he lived until his death.
