Born in Matera, Italy, Luigi Guerricchio studied stage design at the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Naples. There he joined the group of Young Neapolitan Realists (Giovani Realisti Napoletani). He also met the poet Portici Rocco Scotellaro who would have a lasting impact on his work. Through Scotellaro he also came into contact with Carlo Levi and Renato Guttoso in Rome. He also met the poet Portici Rocco Scotellaro who would have a lasting impact on his work. Through Scotellaro he also came into contact with Carlo Levi and Renato Guttoso in Rome. He stayed temporarily in Salzburg where he attended the painting and sculpture classes of Oskar Kokoschka and Giacomo Manzù. In 1956 he moved to Milan where he attended the Accademia di Brera under the guidance of Domenico Cantatore. In the 1960s he returned to Matera where he lived until his death.
