    Married to artist Charles Woodbury with whom she first studied art, Susan Woodbury became noted for her figural works in pastel, watercolor and oil.

    She was the daughter of a South Berwick, Maine family and her father was a judge. She studied art with Charles Woodbury and of their courtship it was written: "As beautiful as she was willful, she reduced Charles to adoring despair. Buttressed by Victorian decorum, he finally summoned the courage to say to her one day: 'Miss Oakes, I simply cannot teach you to paint, but if you will have me, I would like to marry you.' " (Tragard 7)
