    Margarete Gillin biographical photo
Born in Brantford, Ontario, Canada, Margarete Gillin lived in California and Hawaii and, widowed as a young woman with three children, supported her family successfully with portrait and still-life painting.

She studied art in France on a scholarship, and in 1869 settled in Northern California, where she continued her studies in 1874 in San Francisco at the School of Design. One of her daughters married a resident of Hawaii, and Gillin went there in 1880 and stayed for some time doing many paintings, especially of local flowers and fruit.

Exhibition venues included the School of Design. Her work is in the Bishop Museum in Honolulu.

She died in Oakland on January 21, 1915.
