Born in Brantford, Ontario, Canada, Margarete Gillin lived in California and Hawaii and, widowed as a young woman with three children, supported her family successfully with portrait and still-life painting. She studied art in France on a scholarship, and in 1869 settled in Northern California, where she continued her studies in 1874 in San Francisco at the School of Design. One of her daughters married a resident of Hawaii, and Gillin went there in 1880 and stayed for some time doing many... Read full biography

She studied art in France on a scholarship, and in 1869 settled in Northern California, where she continued her studies in 1874 in San Francisco at the School of Design. One of her daughters married a resident of Hawaii, and Gillin went there in 1880 and stayed for some time doing many paintings, especially of local flowers and fruit.
