About Margaretta Angelica Peale

  • Biography

A talented painter, known for fruit still life, she is regarded as one of the most skillful artists of that subject during her time, but of the fifty mentioned in records between 1820 and 1865, only eleven examples have been found. Her style was the use of clear outlines, general forms, and subtleties of frontal lighting. She also did portraits, and several of them are at George Washington University.

She was the daughter of portraitist James Peale who began painting as his studio assistant, and from 1828 to 1837, she exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Unmarried, she lived at the end of her life with her famous sister, portraitist Sarah Miriam Peale.
