In 1870, he became a pupil of Richard Clague, the city's foremost landscape painter, and it was Clague who is credited as the greatest influence on Smith. He also studied with Theodore Sidney Moise. In 1874, Smith left New Orleans to study in Rome and Munich and to tour Italy, England, and France.
