Born and artistically trained in Genoa, Mattia Traverso spent long periods in Rome where he devoted himself to predominantly religious painting and also dabbled in fresco painting; he also devoted himself to the creation of portraits on private commission, especially of the Genoese bourgeoisie, including that of the Marquis Durazzo Pallavicini characterised by a seventeenth-century setting.
