    Maurice Sterne was born in Memel, Latvia on August 8, 1878. Sterne came to the U. S. in 1890 and began his art training at the National Academy of Design and Art Students League in New York City. After 1914 he divided his time between Italy and the U.S.

    An internationally recognized artist, he was one of the first artists to discover Bali and popularize scenes of that area. He was a visiting instuctor at the California School of Fine Arts during 1935-36. Sterne died in Mount Kisco, New York on July 23, 1957.

    Exhibited: Painters & Sculptors of Los Angeles, 1930; San Francisco Museum of Art, 1935 (solo); Golden Gate International Exposition, 1939; nationally and abroad.

    Works held: Art Institute of Chicago; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Carnegie Institute; Boston Museum; Detroit Museum; Corcoran Gallery of Art; Cleveland Museum; Yale University; Tate Gallery (London); Library, Department of Justice Bldg, (murals); San Diego Museum; Metropolitan Museum.
