Max Bergmann was born in 1884 in Fürstenberg and died in 1955 in Haimhausen/Pfalz. Bergmann was a master student of Heinrich von Zügel. He studied at the Academies in Munich and Berlin. In the latter city he visited the Aktmalklasse of Ludwig von Herterich and from 1903 the Tiermalklasse by Heinrich von Rein, whose protégé he was in 1907.
With his master, Max Bergmann spent the summer months in Wörth am Rhein. In 1909/10 he studied in Paris and tours took him to Northern France, Denmark, Norway, Austria and Hungary. From 1910 his works were exhibited on an almost annual basis in the Munich Glass Palace.
