    The German painter Max Uth was born 1863 in Berlin and studied at the arts academy under Eugen Bracht. He continued his studies during journeys to Belgium, Dalmatia, Italy and Tyrol. In 1897 he opened a studio for female students, which was visited by Gertrud Berger (1870-1949), Laura Schaberg (ca. 1860-1935) and Sophie Wencke-Meinken (1874-1963). He was an art professor and director of the Berlin Malschule.

    He was a member of the Novembervereinigung since 1895. He was one of the founding members of the Berlin Secession in 1899. He belonged to the important landscape painters together with Walter Leistikow. He participated in the Große Berliner Kunstausstellung in 1905. Uth died in 1914. (tm)
