In 1897 he opened a studio for female students, which was visited by Gertrud Berger (1870-1949), Laura Schaberg (ca. 1860-1935) and Sophie Wencke-Meinken (1874-1963). He was an art professor and director of the Berlin Malschule. He was a member of the Novembervereinigung since 1895. He was one of the founding members of the Berlin Secession in 1899.
