    Ayrton was a visual artist working in a variety of media, including wax and found objects such as bones and wood. He did theatrical design, film, and book illustrations, in addition to paintings and sculpture. He was also a gifted critic and writer. He was associated, as designer, illustrator or critic (and as friend) with many writers and visual artists of the period, including Dylan Thomas, Walter Sickert, Ezra Pound, Wyndham Lewis, C.P. Snow, Henry Moore, Eliot and others.

    Born on February 20, 1921, in London, he died November 17, 1975. His father was Gerald Gould, writer/critic, and his mother Barbara Ayrton, Labour politician.
