About Mike Larsen

  • Biography

An Oklahoma painter and sculptor, he depicts his own Chickasaw ancestors. One of his largest projects was a three-year effort: "Mike Larsen: Shamans of the Nations," that culminated in a May, 1998 exhibition at the Oklahoma City Art Museum. It was a visual tribute to the Native American tribes of Oklahoma with portraits of the shamans from the various nations dressed in their clothing typical of their life before they were relocated. Shamans are specially wise persons with healing abilities.

Larsen was born in Dallas, Texas and was raised in Wynnewood, Oklahoma and spent his youth going between the two states. He studied art at the University of Houston and completed his formal studies at the Art Students League in New York City.
